Udo Kier, the German actor celebrated for his piercing gaze and compelling portrayals of villains, monsters, and eccentric characters, has died at 81. His death was confirmed on Sunday by his partner, Delbert McBride, to Variety. Kier passed away in a hospital in Palm Springs, California, according to photographer Michael Childers. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Kier’s career spanned over 275 film and television roles in both European cinema and Hollywood, where he frequently played antagonists in memorable performances.

“I like horror films,” Kier said. “If you play small or guest parts, it is better to be evil and scare people than be the guy who works in the post office and goes home to his wife and children. Audiences will remember you more.”
